"The Lights in the Sky are Stars" is a book from the fifties. The essence of this story is comparable to today's space policy.

Max is a rocket scientist and an alcoholist as well. He started drinking because the work he has been doing has stopped. The space frontier has stopped. Max is standing in front of the mirror and knows that the time he has left in him is running out of him like the water out of a bathtub. And he asks himself: How far did we come? We have a small outpost on Jupiter and a colony on Mars. And what else? We're stuck. And he decides to do something about this. He runs a course in rocket science, because he was out for a while, and 6 months later finishes his exams. He will work himself to death to push to frontier forward. And to do this he has to convince the politicians about the importance of spaceflight. He starts a loving affair with a politician, who has a lot influence within congress. Things start rolling again and the frontier seems to move, but Max wants more! He actually gets the chance to ride a rocket himself, to Jupiter, in fact. But in the end his senses pull him back to Earth and he realizes how far humanity has actually come. The developments of the past 100 years are truly phenomenal. A thousand years ago we were running stupid crusades, and what are we doing now? We are travelling to the stars! There is nothing that can stop us now! Max and his lover fight themselves through the political system and by lying and cheating they find a way to convince the power-oriented politicians about the importance of spaceflight.


"The Lights in the Sky are Stars" is een boek uit de jaren vijftig. De essentie van het boek is toepasbaar op het huidige ruimtevaart beleid.


Een raket geleerde genaamd Max zuipt zich kapot. Hij is ontslagen bij de ruimtevaart organisatie want er is geen werk. Het ruimte frontier staat namelijk stil. (net als nu) Hij staat voor de spiegel en weet dat de tijd die hij nog over heeft uit hem weg loopt als het water uit een bad. En hij vraagt zich af: Waar zijn we gekomen? We hebben een kleine nederzetting op Jupiter, een kolonie op Mars.. Maar verder? We zitten vast. En hij besluit op dat moment om er iets aan te doen. Hij gaat studeren en doet een half jaar later examen in raket wetenschap. Hij zal zich gaan kapot werken om de ruimtevaart vooruit te duwen richting een nieuw frontier. Hij weet dat hij de politici moet overtuigen, want zij staan nogal vijandelijk tegenover de ruimtevaart. Hij maakt gauw een vriendschap met een vrouwelijke politicus want zij heeft veel invloed binnen het congress. Max wordt meteen verliefd, maar hij snapt niet waarom want hij is nooit echt verliefd geweest. De twee worden een gouden duo en weten enorme vooruitgang te boeken in het congress. De ruimtevaart gaat vooruit en er zit weer beweging in. Maar voor Max is het niet genoeg. Hij wil meer! Hij krijgt de kans om zelf in een raket te stappen en de reis te maken, naar Jupiter. Maar het verstand overwint en hij bezint uiteindelijk tot waar ze nu gekomen zijn. Hij komt tot het inzicht dat de ontwikkeling van de afgelopen 100 jaar fenomenaal zijn. 1000 jaar geleden deden we nog stomme kruisvaart tochten, en wat doen we nu? We reizen naar de planeten! Er is niets dat ons nog kan tegenhouden. Ze vechten door het politieke systeem heen en door te liegen en bedriegen weten ze de machtlustige politici te overtuigen van het belang van ruimtevaart.
